Skin tags seem to pop out of nowhere and can be very unsightly. They can also be a cause for concern and should be evaluated by a dermatologist to rule out a more serious skin condition such as skin cancer. If you are looking for skin tag removal in Ellicott City, you’ve come to the right place. We can help!
What Are Skin Tags?
Skin tags (acrochordons) are benign flesh-colored skin growths that typically appear in areas where the skin rubs a lot, such as the neck, underarms, or inner thighs, but they can appear anywhere on the body. They are usually a few millimeters in size and look like they are growing on a stalk or stem. They can hang down and become caught on clothing or jewelry.
What Causes Skin Tags?
You may be at risk for skin tags if you have a family history of skin tags, are obese and/or have diabetes, or are pregnant.
How Are Skin Tags Removed?
Danielle LeClair, NP prefers to remove skin tags by numbing the area and cutting the skin tags off with scissors. After the skin tag removal, there can be some bleeding. Cauterizing the base of the skin tag helps prevent excessive bleeding. Dermatologists are trained in minimizing scarring, which is why skin tag removal is recommended to be performed in a medical office instead of at home. Skin tags can also be removed by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. Either way there is no downtime after skin tag removal.
Is Skin Tag Removal Covered By Insurance?
Skin tag removal can be covered by insurance if the skin tags are irritated or infected. Skin tag removal can also be covered by insurance if your dermatologist suspects the skin tag may be something else, at which point a biopsy may be preferred. Other skin lesions such as warts or skin cancer can resemble skin tags, which is why it is important to have the skin tags evaluated by a dermatology specialist.
What If I Don’t Like The Appearance Of My Skin Tags?
If the appearance of your skin tags bothers you, then, no, skin tag removals are not covered by insurance. However, skin tag removal can still be performed for cosmetic reasons for a nominal fee.

I have a rough chest. I just notice this month. I suspect skin tags but they are so close to the chest. When I rub my hand across my chest it feels like real fine small bumps. It is a lot of them and I am afraid they are going up in my neck area. They are also under the breasts. I took two Shingles shots back in the spring. I was wondering if those shots could have something to do with this.
