Let’s Talk Sun Spots

When you were a kid your parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles pinched your freckled cheeks telling you how adorable you looked. Fast forward a few years and the new age spots on your face aren’t looking so cute anymore.

Sun spots (sometimes called age spots) are flat brown circular marks that appear on your skin after years of excess sun exposure. UV light from sun (and tanning beds) accelerates the production of melanin, a natural pigment which is responsible for giving your skin color. Prevention is key when you’re talking about sun spots and that is why sunscreens are your first line treatment. It is recommended that you apply SPF 30 or above and reapply every 2 hour, and, of course, avoid tanning beds.

It is very important to have these spots evaluated by a healthcare provider to rule out skin cancer. Once determined that these spots are benign treatment can be initiated.

Whether it be a recommendation for an over-the-counter sunscreen or a prescription lightening cream our licensed healthcare provider can evaluate your sun spots and help you get the treatment you’re looking for.
